Notion is the default workspace for a large share of startups, and deservedly so: it merges documents, relational databases, wikis and lightweight project tracking into one tool with a genuinely pleasant editor. Its AI can draft, summarise, translate and answer questions across your workspace content, and the database model is flexible enough to run a CRM, a content calendar and an engineering roadmap out of the same building blocks. That flexibility is also its central failure mode. Teams build elaborate nested systems that nobody maintains, and a year later the workspace is an archaeology site. It is slower than a plain notes app, and gets noticeably sluggish on large databases. It is online-first — offline support has improved but is still not something to rely on. And the AI is a paid add-on layered on top of a paid plan, which stings. Excellent for a team that wants one place for everything and has the discipline to keep it tidy; poor as a fast personal scratchpad.
