Overview

Zed is what happens when people who previously built Atom decide to do it again in Rust with the GPU doing the drawing. The speed is not marketing: keystroke-to-pixel latency is visibly better than Electron-based editors, and that difference compounds over a working day. On top of that foundation it has added a credible AI layer — an agent panel that can run multi-file work, an inline assistant for transforming selections, an open-source edit-prediction model, and support for bringing in external agents like Claude Agent or Codex over ACP, plus MCP servers. Crucially, the Personal plan is free forever and lets you use your own API keys without limit, which means the AI is optional rather than a paywall. The reason not to switch is the ecosystem. VS Code has fifteen years of extensions, debuggers and niche language support; Zed does not, and if your workflow depends on one obscure plugin, you will hit that wall quickly.
