Every "best free AI SEO tools" article you have read was published by a company that sells AI SEO software. Check the footer of the next one. The list will contain that company's product, it will be ranked first, and the free tier being recommended is a signup form with a three-query cap attached.
ToolsPantry sells no SEO software, so here is the version with nothing to protect: the single most valuable free SEO tool is Google Search Console, and it contains no AI at all. After that, a general-purpose model like ChatGPT or Claude on its free tier does more genuinely useful SEO work than most of the purpose-built "AI SEO" free plans, which exist to make you upgrade rather than to make you rank.
Below: what is actually free, what the cap really is, and which ones are lead magnets wearing a product's clothes.
First, the thing that is free and beats all of them
Google Search Console. Free forever, no tier, no cap that matters. It tells you which queries you already rank for, at what position, with what click-through rate — real data from the actual search engine, not a third-party estimate. Every keyword tool on the market is guessing at numbers that Search Console gives you for your own site, precisely, for nothing.
The highest-leverage SEO hour most site owners can spend: open the Performance report, filter to queries where you rank between roughly position 5 and 20, and improve those pages. You are already relevant. You are just not quite winning. No AI tool will hand you a better list of opportunities than that, because no AI tool has your impression data.
Alongside it: Bing Webmaster Tools (free, and increasingly worth watching now that Bing's index feeds several AI answer engines), Google Trends (free, and the only honest source on seasonality), and PageSpeed Insights (free, and the actual Core Web Vitals numbers rather than a vendor's proxy).
Start there. Then, and only then, consider what AI adds.
What AI is genuinely good at in SEO — and what it is not
Good at: clustering a messy keyword list into topics, drafting a brief from a set of SERP titles, writing schema markup (a task that is tedious, rules-based, and exactly what a language model should be doing), turning a page outline into an FAQ block, spotting the questions your draft fails to answer, and generating meta descriptions at volume without you losing your will to live.
Bad at: search volume. Difficulty scores. Anything that requires a proprietary index of the web. A language model does not know how many people searched for a term last month, and if it tells you it does, it is making the number up. This is the single most common way people burn a week of SEO effort — treating a hallucinated volume figure as data.
The line is clean: use AI for judgment, structure, and language. Use real tools for data.
The free tiers worth having
General-purpose models (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini)
The free tiers of ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are the most underrated SEO tools in existence, because they are not marketed as SEO tools and therefore have no reason to cripple you into upgrading.
Paste your top 200 Search Console queries and ask for topic clusters. Paste a competitor's H2s and ask what they left out. Ask for valid FAQPage JSON-LD. Ask it to rewrite a title tag six ways under 60 characters. All of this is real work, all of it is free, and none of it requires an SEO-branded product.
- Who should use it: everyone. Genuinely everyone.
- Who should not: nobody, though do not ask it for keyword volumes.
Google's own free stack
Search Console, Trends, Analytics, PageSpeed. Gemini is bolted into much of the Google Workspace surface. This stack costs nothing and covers data, measurement, and drafting.
Keyword Surfer (from Surfer SEO)
A free Chrome extension from the makers of Surfer SEO that overlays estimated volumes onto Google results. It is a lead magnet — that is the honest description — but it is a good lead magnet, because the extension is genuinely useful and does not nag. Treat the volume estimates as directional, never as truth.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools
Ahrefs offers a free tier for site owners who verify ownership: a backlink profile and a site audit for your own domain. This is the most substantial free thing in the paid-SEO-tool world, and the restriction is the point — you get real data, but only about sites you can prove you own. That is fine. Your own site is the one you can change.
Screaming Frog
Not AI, and it does not pretend to be. The free version crawls a capped number of URLs per site (a few hundred — check the current limit), which is enough for most small sites and all of the technical problems that actually cost you traffic: broken links, redirect chains, missing titles, orphaned pages.
AnswerThePublic / AlsoAsked
Question-mining tools with tight free limits — a handful of searches a day. Worth it for the People Also Ask structure that feeds an FAQ section. Then stop, because the free cap arrives fast and the paid tier is not the best use of a small budget.
The lead magnets
Being direct about this, since nobody else will be.
Most "free AI SEO tool" landing pages are one of three things. A trial — free for seven days, then billed, and the tool is designed so that a week is not long enough to migrate off it. A capped demo — free, but three queries, three articles, or one audit, calibrated to be exactly one item short of a real job. Or a free tool page built purely for links — a headline generator, a meta description generator — which exists to rank for a keyword and collect your email.
None of that is dishonest, and some of the tools are excellent when you pay for them. But calling a seven-day trial a "free AI SEO tool" is a category error, and every listicle that does it is padding its count.
The paid tools genuinely worth the money once you have outgrown free: Frase for briefs and content optimisation, Clearscope for editorial teams that need consistency at scale, Surfer SEO for content scoring, and Alli AI for on-page changes at scale without a developer queue. We break these down in the best AI SEO tools guide and in our list of cheaper Surfer alternatives.
What's actually free — the honest table
| Tool | What's genuinely free | The real limit | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|

| Ahrefs Webmaster Tools | Backlinks + audit, verified sites | Your own domains only | Best free data in the paid-tool world |
| Screaming Frog | Crawl up to a few hundred URLs | URL cap per crawl | Fine for small sites; not AI |

A free SEO workflow that actually works
- Verify in Search Console and wait a week. You cannot optimise what you cannot measure, and you need the data before the tools mean anything.
- Export your queries. Filter to positions 5-20. That is your list.
- Cluster it with a free model. Paste the export into ChatGPT or Claude and ask for topic groups with the search intent of each. This is the step people pay for and should not.
- Read the top three results yourself. Every one of them. Ten minutes per keyword. No content-score tool will replace this, and every good SEO does it.
- Brief with AI, write with a human. Ask the model what the top results cover and what they miss. The gap is your angle. Then write it — see how to make AI writing not sound like AI writing if drafting is the bottleneck.
- Generate the schema with AI. FAQPage, Article, BreadcrumbList. It is rules-based work and a model does it faster and more accurately than you will at 6pm.
- Crawl with Screaming Frog once a quarter. Fix the broken links. This is unglamorous and it works.
Notice that nothing in that list required a paid SEO subscription. Most sites under a few thousand monthly visitors do not need one, and buying one early is a way of feeling productive rather than being productive.
FAQ
What is the best free AI SEO tool?
The free tier of a general-purpose model — ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini — will do more useful SEO work than any purpose-built free AI SEO plan, because it is not engineered to run out. Use it for keyword clustering, brief building, schema markup, and title rewrites. Pair it with Google Search Console, which is free, contains no AI, and is more valuable than all of them.
Are free AI SEO tools actually free?
Rarely, in the way you mean. Most are trials that convert to billing, or demos capped at a few queries. The genuinely free ones are Google's own stack (Search Console, Trends, PageSpeed), Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for sites you own, Keyword Surfer's extension, and the free tiers of the big chat models. Everything else on a typical "free" list is a lead magnet, which is fine as long as you know that going in.
Can AI do keyword research for free?
It can do the thinking part of keyword research for free — grouping terms, inferring intent, spotting gaps, expanding a seed list. It cannot do the data part. Language models do not have search volume, and one that gives you a volume figure is inventing it. Get the terms from Search Console and the ideas from a model.
Will AI-written content hurt my rankings?
Google's stated position is that it rewards helpful content regardless of how it was produced, and penalises content produced primarily to manipulate rankings. In practice, mass-produced unedited AI text tends to fail because it is generic, not because a detector caught it. Use AI for research and structure, add something only you know, and edit properly.
Do I need a paid SEO tool at all?
Not at the start, and most small sites buy one far too early. Search Console plus a free model plus reading the SERP yourself will carry you a long way. Once you are publishing regularly and need briefs, consistency, and reporting across a team, the AI SEO tools category and the SEO content tools category are where to look.
Start with what's free
Set up Search Console. Use a free chat model for the thinking. Read the SERP with your own eyes. Come back to paid tools when a specific thing is slow and money would make it fast — not before.
