Overview

Replicate lets you call thousands of community-published models — image generation, video, audio, language, upscaling, whatever someone has packaged — through a single consistent API, with no GPU to provision. Its underlying tool, Cog, is open source, and it is what lets you package your own model and deploy it on the same infrastructure with autoscaling handled for you. Most models bill by the second of GPU time at a rate that depends on the hardware; some bill per output or per token instead. For prototyping, for the long tail of specialised models nobody else hosts, and for shipping a feature before you commit to owning inference, it is excellent. Where it stops being excellent is at scale. Per-second billing on variable-duration inference makes costs hard to forecast, cold starts on infrequently used models are slow enough that users notice, and private deployments bill idle time as well as active time. If your volume is steady and high, running the model yourself will be cheaper — that is arithmetic, not opinion.

Features

API access to thousands of community-published open models
Cog, an open-source tool for packaging models into deployable containers
Private deployments of your own or fine-tuned models
Fine-tuning support for supported base models
Automatic scaling up and down with demand
Per-second GPU billing, with per-output or per-token billing on some models

Pros & cons

Pros

  • By far the easiest way to run an obscure open model without touching a GPU
  • Cog is genuinely useful and open source, even outside Replicate
  • Autoscaling means you do not manage capacity at all
  • Excellent for prototyping and for shipping features before committing to infrastructure

Cons

  • Cold starts on infrequently used models are slow enough to be user-visible
  • Per-second billing on variable-length inference makes cost forecasting difficult
  • Private deployments charge for idle instance time, not just active processing
  • At steady high volume, self-hosting is meaningfully cheaper
