Overview

OpenRouter is a router, not a model provider. You buy credits, you get one API key, and behind it sits a very large catalogue of models from many upstream providers — accessed through an OpenAI-compatible interface, so most existing code works unchanged. Two things make it worth the hop. The first is failover: if an upstream provider goes down or rate-limits you, OpenRouter can fall back to another one serving the same model, which turns a hard outage into a slower response. The second is comparison: switching from one vendor's model to another's is a string change, which makes actually evaluating alternatives cheap instead of a week of integration work.
