This goes a step beyond a chatbot, which responds turn by turn, and beyond fixed automation, which follows a path you designed. An agent decides its own steps toward the goal.

That autonomy is the appeal and the risk. Agents can handle open-ended, multi-step work that rigid workflows can't, but they're less predictable, and an agent acting on your tools and data can cause real damage as easily as real value. The central, still-unsolved challenge is reliability — whether an agent actually completes real tasks correctly rather than wandering, looping or confidently doing the wrong thing — which is why guardrails, oversight and reviewable output matter as much as raw capability.

AI agents are the fastest-moving frontier in AI, shifting tools from answering questions to completing tasks. Understanding the difference between an agent (decides its own steps), a chatbot (converses), and automation (follows your script) helps you choose the right tool and apply the right level of oversight — because agents need more supervision precisely because they act more independently.

A concrete example

Asked to "research three competitors and put their pricing in a spreadsheet," an agent might plan the steps, browse each competitor's site, extract the pricing, open a spreadsheet tool, and fill it in — adjusting when a page doesn't load — then present the result. A chatbot would just tell you how to do it; the agent attempts to actually do it.
